The Hindu temples of West Garo Hills are numerous in Meghalaya, the most distinctive of which is the Charantala Temple (Kali Mandir). Located in the Ramdengiri/Magumari region, the temple is very famous for its annual Kali Puja, the festival involving traditional rituals and animal offerings. To this is added Tura Thakurbari; the district’s other temples and numerous Shiva and Kali Mandirs are dispersed throughout towns in areas such as Garobadha, Phulbari, and Tangabari. These sites collectively showcase the region’s unique spiritual landscape with traditional Garo belief systems based on Songsarek animism existing alongside Hindu religious practices. There are also historical sites like Wadago-gok, which reflect the cultural and historical depth of the area.
