Tamil Nadu is popularly called as the ‘Land of Temples’; for it is the home to almost 33000 ancient temples out of which some are at least 2000 years old. Tamil Nadu temples are believed to have been specially mentioned in the ancient Tamil Hymns of the 1st millennium C.E. Of the many famous temples Tamil Nadu, are the Rameshwaram temple, Thanjavur temple, Mahabalipuram temple, Kanchipuram temple, Chidambaram temple, Meenakshi Temple and Ekambareswarar Temple attract hordes of devotees and tourists from different parts of the country.

Of the most visited Tamil Nadu temples, the Meenakshi Temple complex in Madurai is the largest, most ancient and revered temples, with 14 towering ‘Gopurams’, the tallest being 170 feet in length. Dedicated to the Lord Shiva and Parvati, who is known as Meenakshi, this temple has the center of attraction in many films. The Natarajh temple in Chidambaram is considered to be one of the most adored temples in Tamil Nadu. Among other famous temples Tamil Nadu, the Kapaleeswarar Temple at Mylapore, in Chennai dedicated to Lord Shiva is considered to be around 1000 years old and draws huge number of devotees on festivals. A most prominent pilgrimage center for the Hindu devotees is the ‘Holy Island of Rameswaram’, where the most famous of the temples in Tamil Nadu lays, the temple of Rameswaram in an island at about 160 kilometers from Madurai. Near to this famous Tamil Nadu Temples also is another pilgrimage site called the Dhanushkodi or Sethu. Thanjavur temples are also immensely famous Tamil Nadu temples and visited by many devotees.

Tamil Nadu is the southern most state of India with area of 130,058 square kilometers and a population of about 68,000,000. The hill stations: Kodaikanal, Coonoor, Kotagiri, Yelagiri, Yercuad, and Udagamandalam are best in this part of the country and draw scores of foreign tourists from all parts of the world. Tamil Nadu especially is also famous for the film industry, as many films in south India are made here and it is also the home to many popular film personalities
