Meghalaya is a very small state in north eastern part of the Indian Territory. Meghalaya temples slowly got popularity and today it is also one of the centers for major pilgrimages held annually. Many temples in Meghalaya are located deep inside the valleys and hills and can only be reached by foot. The Temple of Goddess Durga, built during the 16 century is also most one of the famous temples Meghalaya, while the Matri Mandir temple is dedicated to the Goddess Kali and is extremely popular for devotees across the nation.

Meghalaya is a small state in the north-eastern India and is geographically a hilly strip about 300 kilometers long and 100 kilometers wide, with a total area of approximately 22,400 square kilometers. It is also called as ‘The Abode of Clouds’ and one-third of the state is covered in forests. The state has a population of about 2,306,069. Meghalaya is considered to be the wettest place on the earth and the temperatures rarely go past 28 degrees Celsius. Chirapunjee town located on the Khasi hills receives the highest rainfall and holds the world record for ‘most rain in a calendar month’. Mawsynram, a neighboring village receives heaviest yearly rainfall. Owing to the incessant rains, Meghalaya’s forests are the thickest surviving forests in the country, with exotic flora and fauna—the forests of Meghalaya are said to contain more than 3000 kinds of orchids. There are 2 National parks and around 3 Wild Life Sanctuaries in Meghalaya.

Often referred to as the ‘Scotland of the East’, the state’s capital Shillong is breathtaking and has a striking similarity to the beautiful country of Scotland. Most of the Meghalaya temples are scattered across this city

All tourists visiting the state in fact are reminded to carry an umbrella compulsorily. October through November and March through April are the most recommended months to visit Meghalaya.

Most important tourist destinations in Meghalaya include: Cherrapunjee and its spectacular 50 kilometer stretch of long road that connects with Shillong, the sizzling hot springs at Jakrem near Mawsynram which are said to have curative powers, for medicinal curative, the Umiam Lake. Also not to forget are the water falls like the Elephant Falls, Shadthum Falls, Weinia Falls, Bishop Falls, Nohkalikai Falls, Langshiang falls and Sweet Falls, besides many trekking, water skiing and adventurous sports.

The most important of fairs and festivals in Meghalaya, are the Khasi festival, Shad Suk Mynsiem and thet Ka Pomblang Nongkrem, that embodifies virgin dances, goat sacrifices among others.
